The 3 gluten-free carbs I thought I'd hate (but LOVE!)

It's no secret carbs can get quite boring if you're a coeliac. I often stick to just rice or potatoes. It's not exactly a nutritionist's dream. And it can get really boring. Much as I like them, eating yet another jacket potato isn't always desirable.

Potatoes are naturally gluten-free but it's good to try other things

So I was really pleased to find some new and exciting alternatives that offer good nutrition and don't break the bank.

First up: quinoa. Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking. It doesn't taste of much and is about as bland as a carbohydrate can get.

But did you know you can get red quinoa? Yep! That's right. Somehow it's more exciting than it's beige counterpart. It's crunchier and looks much more appealing on a dinner plate.

Quinoa made exciting (it can be done!)

My next new favourite is organic black noodles. There's nothing quite like a dark rice noodle to complement a stir-fry, or make your guests do a double-take.

Last up is buckwheat flour. I know, I know, it's been around for ages, but I kept seeing 'may contain gluten' warnings and I steered clear. However, after finding a trustworthy brand for coeliacs (Clearspring, if you're wondering) I was able to try out some buckwheat pancakes for breakfast, and they didn't disappoint. I even made extra and toasted them the next day.

So where can you find these goodies? I must confess, I didn't get them at the local supermarket. But any good health food shop should stock them, and they're well worth seeking out.

Have you tried any alternative gluten-free grains recently? Do share your story below!
